PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2011-2012
August 15, 2011
Welcome to all the new and returning students and families at St. James School. This is just a little note about what is happening in P. E. this year. Each class participates two times per week on Mondays and Wednesdays. For safety reasons and to keep our gym floor looking nice, tennis shoes are a must in order to participate. If desired, a pair of tennis shoes may be brought to school and stored in the classroom or locker room for P. E. days. Throughout the year there will be special dress up days so please make sure students bring a change of shoes with them if they wear nice shoes for that occasion. Thanks! Grades K – 3 remain in their school clothes for class. Students in grades 4-8 are required to wear a St. James School P. E. shirt. An order form for the shirts will be sent home in the near future. Shorts are also required. They may be navy blue or black with no wording on them and appropriate school uniform code length. School uniform shorts will be allowed this year. Cotton gym shorts such as "Softee" brand are not the appropriate length if your child wishes to change from their school shorts. Longer nylon basketball or soccer shorts are usually appropriate length. Please label or initial shirts and shorts to avoid locker room mix-ups. These clothes will be sent home once a month on a Wednesday to be washed. Please remind students it is their responsibility to have them back on Monday. A note reminding students to bring their P. E. clothes back to school will be given to the students if they are forgotten. Consequences for not having the noted P. E. clothes will follow the school uniform policy. If students do not have a P. E. shirt and are placing an order in the office, students will be permitted to wear an appropriate t-shirt ( plain white or school related) and school shorts until the order arrives. Please have appropriate P. E. clothing to school by Monday, August 29th Thanks!
Grade 4 must have a duffle style or sling style bag to keep their clothes in as they store their clothes in the classroom.
Grades 5 – 8 will be issued a combination lock and a locker in the locker room in which to keep their P. E. clothes. They are responsible for maintaining the lock for the year. As you know the locker rooms are used by other schools for sporting events and students have been informed to make sure their lock is secured when they leave the locker room following P. E. If the lock is misplaced or lost during the school year they must reimburse the school as many locks in the past have not been returned. Also for the students who wish to keep deodorant in the locker room, aerosol spray cans are not permitted so please make sure deodorant is of the stick or roll-on type. In the past there has been a slight problem with deodorant being applied to areas of the locker room instead of where it is intended to be used. If the problem exists this year the custodian will aid the students in cleaning the locker rooms of the mess caused by this improper use.
One goal St. James P. E. students will be striving for this year is the continued good sportsmanship we demonstrate both inside and outside school events that we have so often times been noted to show. Please encourage your children to carry this over to competitions throughout the school year.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and hope your children have a great school year and enjoy P. E. while developing skills which will carry on into the future.
If throughout the school year there are any questions feel free to call me at school or my cell phone at 550-9803.
Sincerely,
Sandy Busch
